July 20th, 209 - Muckish Mountain...Day of changing weather and views

Long ride today. We left at 11 and got back around 4:30. Did pretty well till the rain came. You will see us huddled together under anything we could find for a wet lunch. After lunch it cleared up and the sun came out only to surrender to another set of showers. This one there was no shelter. Mom and I wish we had our long rain coats as everything from the waist down got wet. Know what it is like to have monkey butt powder, glide, and rain all mix together while you post and canter?? I’m a glue scientist and may have an invention! Even without the rain we could have used the gel pads toward the end of today’s ride. These English saddles don’t have much padding and what muscle we had for cushion at the beginning of the ride was effectively tenderized (could have been served up and cut with a butter knife) so that it gave way and it was bone on leather… Yup that’s what I call a butt beating trot. At least the canter I could do in a 2 point. The two girls were very spirited but could often under these conditions of duress say “we post twice for every one of yours”.. Yup that’s the difference between a Connemara pony measuring in at 14.2 and an Irish hunter at 16.2 (in human terms it is double tenderized bottom to single tenderized bottom … or twice as many bottom outs)! Well without further explanations… here are the pictures of the day...

Muckish mountain is the peak in the distance on the right of the horse pack. You will see a lot of this today.

Are we there yet? We are riding on the potato famine trail. Built by the women and children during the potato famine as the land owners made them carry the rocks in their aprons with out shoes. Today heather grows abundantly along this path.

Arrived at the base of Muckish mountain. Time for a quick lunch in the rain.

Crazy Terrier going after some animal in a hole by our horses! Not sure what he was digging for but he used his paws and his teeth tearing out big chunks of sod.

Brian and Margaret… here is your surfing beach!
